Why I Made a Podcast

There are thousands of podcasts! What makes this one different? What are the goals of the podcast?

I spent a lot of time watching YouTube videos about increasing productivity, and how people made music or art. Was there some sort of common thing that would be the missing piece to my puzzle that would make it easier for me to create?

After years of accidental research on this topic, I found that everyone’s answers boiled down to either “Just draw every day”, “Practice!” or the worst offender, “Just do it, ‘cause I did and I didn’t know what I was doing”. There was the other side of the coin too where I would watch a very specific video on someone’s process which would include their routine and what kind of equipment they used. After I went out and bought all those things I still couldn’t make music.

Later, when I decided that after a 10 year hiatus I couldn’t possibly continue to call myself a musician, I knew I had to put my imagination to good use. I saw amazing music videos in my head and dreamed of a day that I would be able to share these with someone rather than rambling at them as if I was describing a dream I had. The best way to do that was to make an animated music video with original drawings. I was excited at the possibility that one day I could achieve sakuga one day but it was going to be a long road because I don’t really know how to draw.

I learned through many resources that drawing was a skill. You learn to look at your environment accurately and not according to the way that your brain implements shortcuts to be efficient and build a library of things you can draw without looking at something from reference through some strategic repetition. I learned more of these skills and I am still learning them.

You may notice by this point that there are some differences between the way that I approached my art and music. To be honest I am still unable to pick up an instrument in any capacity that will allow me to show someone something I’m working on or even practice. Still working on finding out why that might be but I noticed the different approach between the two and I am eager to find someone in a similar position who might have dug themselves out of that hole.

And that is why I made the podcast!

In the time that I’ve recorded the last 20 or so episodes, I have discovered that there are many interesting dilemmas that creatives face and those unmovable mental boulders are interesting to explore. One thing I didn’t expect would come out of this was the connection between myself and everyone I interviewed. I’m really looking forward to each future guest!
